Pallavan is a primary years programme for children aged 1.5 to 10 years. It is managed by the Usha Nath Kapur foundation, which is a family foundation of Mr Arun Kapur. Arun Kapur is presently Director of Vasant Valley School Delhi, which is run by the India Today Group. He has over 35 years of experience in the field of education - The Doon School Dehradun, British School New Delhi and Vasant Valley School New Delhi. He was responsible for setting up Vasant Valley School and is currently the Director.He is also the Head of Ritinjali which is an NGO which he set up for education and community development in 1995. He is the author of Transforming Schools: Empowering Children, a book that offers insights to ‘what makes a great school’.
In Dec 2001 he established Pallavan, an early childhood development programme for children between the ages of 1.5 and 5 years. In 2006, he established Pallavanjali, a school and resource centre offering education, therapy and life training to children and young adults with special needs between 0-24 years, in an inclusive holistic environment.
Ms Renu Kaul is the director. She has over 30 years of experience in the field of Early Childhood Education. She has been responsible for setting up and running the Pallavan programme since it's inception. Pallavan has been a very successful programme and has made a name for itself in Gurgaon and in Delhi. One of the reasons for this is the fact that it is backed by people who have many years of experience in the field of education and is thus a well thought out and professionally run programme.
Pallavan started in Dec 2001 and is currently operating from three locations in Delhi and Gurgaon.
Pallavan aims to create an environment where children will be able to discover the genius within themselves.
It is Pallavan’s endeavour to motivate each child by helping them learn the right skills and abilities and also by giving them ample opportunities to display these skills. This will facilitate the early establishment of a positive self image, a feeling of worth and a positive view of learning. The environment at Pallavan, the interactions with the children, the kinds of activities planned are conducive to doing just that.
Pallavan believes that the purpose of education is the actualisation of human potential, the development of a sense of dignity and self worth and the strengthening of respect for human rights, fundamental freedom and human diversity.
Towards that end, Pallavan provides a broad and balanced curriculum which promotes confidence, critical thinking skills, leading to the development of well adjusted adaptable and integrated personalities.
At Pallavan we believe that the early establishment of a positive self image and a positive view of the learning environment provide the foundation for achievement. We recognise the different learning styles, abilities and interests of each child and incorporate that into our learning environment and the educational process.
It has been proven that maximum growth in learning takes place in the age group 0-8 years. As such children coming in to Pallavan already have 2 to 3 years of learning behind them. They bring with them a host of ideas, suggestions, views and strengths. At Pallavan we continue the learning process that began at 0 years and incorporate the knowledge, abilities, learning styles and strengths of the child and of the group she belongs to, into the learning environment and the educational process. Accordingly the children are an integral part of the planning process. Their pre-knowledge forms the starting point of all planning. In a group of 12 to 16 children we thus have a bank of knowledge, abilities, views and strengths.
Reflection too, is an integral part of the learning process. Children, staff and parents are all required to reflect on the programme. The last slot on the daily time table is reserved for the child’s reflection. Staff spend time at the end of each day for reflection. Parent’s reflections find a place in the response column of the quarterly reports. These reflections form part of the continuous process of assessment, planning and reporting.
Pallavan recognises the importance of play as an avenue for learning and enjoyment and has built the programme around it. Children’s play is used to further language development, improve social skills, introduce scientific and mathematical concepts and above all, develop creativity and sensitivity. The children are involved in the planning process so that areas of their interest can be identified and stimulating experiences can be planned.
According to the Pallavan philosophy the child learns best in the home environment. Keeping this in mind the space has not been divided into class rooms but into interest areas like the story corner, the cooking areas, reading room, art corner and the role play center.
The child’s progress will be communicated to the parents on a weekly basis through Pallavan’s website: www.pallavan.com. There will also be verbal and written communications with parents on a regular basis.
Pallavan is a community of learners. The staff at Pallavan are caring and sensitive to the individual needs of the child, their most important qualification being an open mind. We envisage learning as a partnership between the child, parents and the adults at Pallavan and encourage their active participation in the learning process. Prior information is given to parents about the unit planned so that they can contribute in terms of ideas, activities and active involvement.
The staff/child ratio at Pallavan is 1:8. Each group will have 12 children in the age group of 1.5 to 2.5 years or 16 children in the age group 2.5 to 3.5 or 20 children in the age group of 3.5 to 4.5 years. There will be one ayah attending to the needs of each group. We have three programmes at Pallavan where children are divided according to age
Admissions take place through the year and a child needs to be 2 years of age to qualify. Admissions are open to all children subject to availability of space. Children with special needs are eligible for admission if Pallavan is equipped to provide necessary facilities and to benefit them.
