This is an introduction to the study of the development of a child from conception to 7 years. It includes the study of physical, emotional, social and cognitive aspects of development keeping in mind norms and deviations from the norm. Child study methods are also introduced. |

PHILOSOPHY |

The course will give an overview of different Philosophies and approaches of Education, namely, the Montessori Approach, Reggio Emillia Approach, Waldorf Approach, Primary Years Program and the Pallavan Approach. It will provide the historical and cultural background, the central operating principles, kind of classroom environment, role of the teacher, pedagogical materials used, how the child develops, involvement of parents, benefits and criticism of the above approaches. |

PSYCHOLOGY |

This module introduces trainees to some fundamental theories of Educational Psychology and the various approaches of Child Psychologists. It will also give the trainees an overview of the key aspects of Behaviour management and its strategies. Behaviour management and some aspects of special needs will also be covered. They will also learn to use effective learning tools like Self Esteem, Motivation & Conditioning. |

COGNITIVE THEORIES |

This course will provide the students with vocabulary and a conceptual framework for interpreting the examples of learning that we observe. It will help the students by directing their attention to those variables that are crucial in finding solutions. The course will give an overview of three main categories or philosophical frameworks under which learning theories fall: behaviourism, cognitivism, constructivism and deal in some detail with the Theory of Cognitive Development developed by Jean Piaget and the Theory of Multiple Intelligences developed by Howard Gardener. It will also dwell on the philosophical framework of learning and education provided by Indian philosophers like J Krishnamurti, Osho and Sri Aurobindo |

HEALTH AND NUTRITION |

The nutrition module is planned to create awareness about the basic principles of nutrition, meal planning, the intricacies of being able to analyse a meal/diet, making balanced menus, analysing recipes and building a food pyramid. Immunizations, common diseases in children and identifying an abused child are areas that will also be addressed. Techniques for Day-care centre nutrition planning, parent interaction to glean nutrition information about the child, creating child friendly recipes and using nutrition to teach preschool concepts are some more concepts that will be dealt with in this module. Also, some FUN Cookery. |

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING |

By now the trainees have gained a substantial amount of knowledge about the development of children. In this module they will learn to informally assess the children, and do an anecdotal observation to gauge their developmental levels. They will also learn to report their observations to the parents in a written as well as verbal format. |

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS |

An introduction to effective communication, how to Interpret nonverbal behaviour, strategize to deal with Barriers to Effective Communication. Integrating Communication Skills into Teaching and Interpersonal skills in education. Developing conversation skills, which further develop child initiated experience. |

The ability to organize a personal portfolio, the intricacies of interviews and finding jobs that fit your personality is an art. That is what we will be dealing with in this sub-module of career management. |

Everything that the trainees have learned and absorbed since the beginning will come to a culmination in this module. The trainees will learn how to set up an enabling environment from the child’s point of view as well as from the point of view of parents and educators. This will include space, curriculum and systems. |

CLASSROOM STRATEGIES |

This module will equip the trainee to deal with classroom situations, including behaviour management and communication strategies. They will learn effective ways of setting up the various preschool activities so that that they are conducive to learning. This module will enable them to plan for the week, for the day, for each activity and for the individual child. |

The inclusion of ethics in programs preparing aspiring school teachers is vital to establishing communities of educators who can help every child reach their fullest potential. Emphasis on ethics is critical to preparing aspiring teachers who are self-aware, self-reflective and self-critical. |
